Oxygen cylinders store oxygen under pressure, and oxygen reservoirs cryogenically hold it as a liquid, and both storage options allow storage of this flammable gas as a result of leakage or explosion. Oxygen cylinders and tanks can be portable, allowing patients in need of additional oxygen to continue treating oxygen away from home.

What is an oxygen cylinder?

Oxygen cylinder is a cylindrical metal container used to store compressed oxygen. Oxygen is compressed under several hundred pounds of pressure and is made of aluminum. It is usually silver with a green top and it may be a small cylinder that is completely green. To distinguish it from other substances stored in similar containers, the green color is used.

The oxygen cylinder has a dome-shaped top, which has a valve on which the oxygen regulator is installed. The regulator controls the amount of oxygen allocated for use, and is measured in liters per minute (l / min). The compressed oxygen is typically stored at about 2000 psi, but there are some "combined" cylinders that can store compressed oxygen at 3000 psi.

In order to provide supplemental oxygen for those who have breathing problems, it is one of the most common uses of compressed oxygen. The type of oxygen cylinder used for this, usually a small, light portable tank. But someone who uses extra oxygen in their home can use a larger tank so that they do not run out so quickly because the cylinders have a fixed amount of oxygen in them. When the bottle is exhausted from oxygen, it must be replenished or replaced.

Oxygen cylinders are presented in various sizes, each of which is designed to its size and is used in a series of letters and numbers. The number placed on the side indicates the number of liter of oxygen cylinder. The letters A, B, C, D and E. are used to indicate the size of the cylinder. One of the smaller cylinders is a cylinder A and contains only about 34 liters of compressed oxygen. One of the larger cylinders is a balloon E and contains about 680 liters of compressed oxygen. The letter "M" on the cylinder indicates that this oxygen cylinder is intended for medical use only.

The advantage of oxygen cylinders is that they do not depend on electricity to produce oxygen. In areas where everyone can be without electricity for several hours or days, this can be of extreme importance.

If you do not behave properly, oxygen cylinders can be dangerous. Particular attention should be paid to opening the reservoir, since oxygen is stored under high pressure. Need to take care not to knock oxygen cylinders. This can lead to a sudden release of pressure and, as you know, transforms the balloon into a dangerous shell.

What are the safety measures for an oxygen cylinder?

When caring for the use and storage of home and portable oxygen containers, the potential for fire and other hazards is minimized. Safety measures:

• Keep tanks at least 10 meters away from fireplaces, stoves, candles or any other open flame.

• Do not smoke when using an oxygen tank and do not allow others to smoke nearby.

• Do not use an electric razor near oxygen storage tanks because of the potential for sparking.

• Do not use grease, oil or other petroleum products near or in a tank and do not use oil-based products on the skin when using the tank.

• Mark each room containing a tank with signs indicating the presence of oxygen cylinders.

• Make sure all smoke detectors in the house are working.
