What is: Ophthalmoscope

Ophthalmoscope is a portable device used to check the internal structure of your eye, including the retina.

Although the ophthalmoscope may seem like a retina, it has a different purpose.

This is a portable device that combines a light source with built-in mirrors and lenses, so that your eye-doctor can study the internal structures of the eye. Ophthalmoscope is especially useful for studying the structure of the retina - a photosensitive area on the back of the eye responsible for image processing.

Traditionally, part of almost every eye expedition, ophthalmoscopes can reveal healthy structures within the eyeball, and it is easy to help the eye doctor to see the symptoms or signs of eye diseases.

In some cases, your eye doctor will use an indirect ophthalmoscope to get a wider look at the internal structure of the eye, especially on the retina.

With indirect ophthalmoscopes, your eye doctor wears a head skin (like a jeweler) that creates a bright light. By holding different hand lenses in front of your eyes, your doctor may better see and enlarge the inside of your eye.

How does an ophthalmoscope work?

Your doctor's eye softens the room's fire and asks you to focus on a fixed point on a distant wall. Using direct or indirect ophthalmoscopes, your eye doctor will explore the structure of your eye. Sometimes, special drops are used to "open" (expand) their students to help the ophthalmologist in the exam.

Your review physician is looking for signs of healthy eye retina and for indicators of any number of potential eye problems, such as cataracts or macular degeneration.
